Dahlia Seed – Shuswap Bee’s Choice
Dahlia Seed – Shuswap Bee’s Choice
If you have never tried growing dahlias from seed, it is something we recommend.
Each plant is unique, with its own colour, form and character emerging over the season. If something stands out, tubers can be lifted and grown again the following year.
Unlike tubers, which return true to type, seed-grown dahlias introduce variation and the possibility of something entirely new.
25-30 seeds per packet
Plant height: 4 to 5 feet or taller
A natural mix of colours and forms
Start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date. We typically begin in May. Sow in cell trays with warmth and light for strong growth. Dahlias have a tendency to germinate sporadically, so be patient. We find that dahlia seedlings (started inside) are the first to bloom compared to plants grown from a tuber. Direct-seeding dahlias is not recommended.
Transplant after frost, planting deeply with top leaves exposed.
Space 6 to 9 inches apart in full sun.
Open-pollinated. Saved seed. Grown with intention at Raven and Steel Farms.
